Phil Collins expresses the idea of facing challenges in his song Against All Odds, Take a Look At Me Now

Spiritual Awakening: Against All Odds

This post was inspired by the Phil Collins song Against All Odds as I was thinking how many of us are beating the odds and making a positive impact in the world. I started to ask what odds were you given and did you accept them or did you say the heck with the odds I am going to do it anyway. When Dr. Wayne Dyer was  looking for a publisher he was turned down on several occasions for his book Your Erroneous Zones, however he didn’t give up or give in he found a publisher and he began to promote and as a result has become one of the top professionals in the personal development field. The power to overcome the odds lies with in us all as we become action takers and go forward in the positive direction of our goals and dreams. Many may tell us it can’t be done because they themselves fear trying to do what we are doing. Many have baggage that they haven’t worked through or haven’t unpacked. As you unpack and release your baggage you will see that you can become an achiever and go against all odds.

Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men express an idea of going against the odds to speak to the angels that watch over you in heaven.

Spiritual Awakening: Ways To Go Aagainst All Odds

When you make the choice to go against all odds you find a deeper meaning to your life. A sense of empowerment is felt when you make the decision to be committed to go against all odds. Many times it means looking deep inside and finding the ways to go against all odds. These ways can help you become the person you want to become and to show others how they can also go against all odds:

1: Take a deep breathe, find a quiet place and begin to ask questions and the answers will reveal themselves in many forms.

2: Find music that reinforces the message so that you can internalize it and bring it out to be the shining light that you are to others.

3: Surround yourself with people who will help you and encourage you to go against all odds.

4: Be of service and value and make a positive impact on others that you come in contact with.

5: Practice love and kindness by being loving and kind to others

6: Read teaching from those who have undergone challenges and that have beaten the odds

7: Remind yourself that you are capable of doing more than others think you can and go do it

8: Be authentic and real in all that you do.

9: Show gratitude to others

10: Celebrate and applaud those who have beaten the odds.

David Naughton teaches us how to make it in this classic song.

Spiritual Awakening: Making It Against All Odds

When you make the choice to make it despite the odds you start to have an awakening and an awareness of what you are capable and you are capable of greatness to go against all odds. It has been stated that what the mind can conceive, the heart can believe and you can achieve. There are so many great examples of this through out our history. I think of all those who may have scorned at people like The Wright Brothers saying that air flight was not possible well they went ahead anyway and went against all odds and showed all those that it could be done. They were innovative and creative and after many attempts they achieved what they set out to do. Roger Bannister was told a sub 4 minute mile was impossible. He didn’t let that notion stop him and he was the first to run a sub 4 minute mile which is now the standard of by which long distance runners are measured.

Roger Bannister showed that with determination and confidence you can beat the odds. In 1954 he set a standard by which runners are measured today.

One of the toughest things in horse racing to do is to win The Triple Crown ( Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and The Blemont). These horses and jockeys prove that you can beat the odds.

Beating the Odds Foundation was founded in 1990 by Rocco Scalzi, a former Altoona Pennsylvania police officer that managed to turn his life around after a tragic incident that occurred in 1980 during his rookie year. Learning that obstacles can become barriers in one’s life, Rocco turned his life around and decided to take his message of hope to others around the country.
After this experience, Rocco traveled the country for six years helping to develop emotional fitness programs in law enforcement. Two startling statistics inspired his work:

  • more police officers each year were killed by their own guns than were killed in the line of duty
  • the average life expectancy of a retired cop was less than six years

After appearing on the Geraldo Riveria television special entitled, “Cop Killers and Killer Cops,” in 1989, Rocco was invited to speak to high school students about his work in law enforcement.

Message to Students

Rocco’s reason for accepting the invitation to speak to high school students over twenty years ago was the result of a school assembly program he attended as an elementary student in 1965. Watching Pennsylvania State Police officers marching in uniform, riding motorcycles and horseback, shooting balloons out of the sky, and speaking about the work of a police officer, Rocco learned the power of a dream. Rocco’s message to students in 1989 focused on dreams, goals, overcoming obstacles, and the importance of developing a never give up attitude. Today, 2 decades later, his message to students is the same.
In 1990, Rocco founded the Beating the Odds Foundation. To kick off this inspirational charity, he brought 15,000 students to Three Rivers Stadium, then-home of the Pittsburgh Steelers, to hear how others reached their dreams and goals despite the obstacles they faced. The first two individuals who joined Rocco that day remain an important part of the Beating the Odds Foundation. Former Pittsburgh Steeler great and Vietnam War hero Rocky Bleier and Vietnam War hero Bob Wieland continue to inspire students and adults to never give up. Rocky Bleier serves as Co-Chairman of the Beating the Odds Foundation.

Rocco has collaborated with many other individuals, we call Quarterbacks of Life®, who faced setbacks and problems, and emerged from some of life’s toughest battles with a victory.  From the lessons of his own life and from years of research about life’s setbacks, and the resilience of those who always seem to rise to the top in the face of adversity, Rocco’s message conveys to everyone that we are the designers of our own destinies.  We are solely responsible for our own thoughts and actions, and ultimately, for our own successes and failures.

Rocco has produced several motivational films for both law enforcement officials and young people, encouraging them to never give up in spite of the obstacles of life.  Rocco has appeared around the country as a guest speaker for schools, corporations, police academies, and on radio and television programs. Today, Rocco serves as Founder and President of the Beating the Odds Foundation.
